This site, untouched for thousands of years, contains one of humanity’s finest artistic expressions. The Pech Merle cave is an authentic chef d’oeuvre of prehistoric art, with amazing paintings like that of the Spotted Horses which are over 30,000 years old.
Visitor Information
Reservations are required year-round. The guided tour lasts one hour and is conducted in either French or English (please select your language when booking). The temperature inside the cave is 13°C, so bring a sweater or light jacket—even in the middle of summer! The tour route involves 300 steps distributed across various levels.
Audioguide for foreign visitors
We are delighted to welcome all our visitors. To help you discover the cave, we offer an audioguide translated into 10 languages: English, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and French.
Tours in English are also organised on a regular basis. Choose this option when you make your booking.
If you are taking a tour in French :
– you can follow the content of the tour by downloading an audioguide (free of charge) on your phone in your own language.
– Don’t forget to bring your earphones so as not to disturb the rest of the group.
For our Israeli friends, we offer translation booklets to take into the cave during the visit.
